Course background

Over the last decade worldwide shield tunnelling has assumed large proportions and knowledge has leaped along with it. Understanding of critical mechanisms has increased and so has computing capability. This has resulted in more advanced design methods. Today shield tunnels are being built in areas with difficult soil conditions while restrictions exist to minimize settlements.

Aim of the course

This three-day course raises the awareness of the key risks involved in a wide range of shield tunneling aspects. As shield tunneling is one of the most integrated construction methods in the civil engineering practice, it is vital to have a good understanding of all
disciplines involved. This course provides good insight in the state of practice of the design methods for the different issues in shield tunneling. The steppingstone is a risk driven design method to come to grips with tunneling projects.

Topics:

  • soil investigation;
  • risk management;
  • lining, backfill grouting, face stability;
  • tunnel boring machines;
  • ground freezing, soil improvement;
  • ground movements, observational method, monitoring;
  • vibration hindrance;
  • re-use of excavated soil and logistics.

For a detailed listing of subjects, please see the course programme.

Excursion

The fourth day of the course is an optional day for an excursion to the Amsterdam Metro line extension project and a shield tunneling project in Rotterdam.

Enrolment

The course fee includes course documentation, lunches and refreshments during the breaks. The fee does not include VAT. International participants from within the European Union are charged 0% VAT only when they provide their organizations VAT number. Participants from outside the European Union are exempt from VAT, hence 0% VAT will be charged. Please use the electronic form on this website for registration.
