Course background

Worldwide buildings and many other constructions are built on pile foundations. Due to the complex behaviour of piles during installation and loading, design of pile foundations is strongly governed by empirical design methods. Recently, considerable progress has been made in the field of understanding, modelling and testing of pile foundations, leading to the use of more advanced models in pile design. This makes it possible to optimize pile design, in particular in case of complex structures and combinations of different types of loading. A proper pile type choice, a reliable pile design and a well thought-out pile installation process can reduce construction risks to a great extend.

Aim of the course

This three-day course will present you the complete scope of pile design and pile behaviour from the principles to state-of-the-art knowledge on modelling and testing. The different aspects of pile design and behaviour will be discussed by selected, well-known instructors from universities and industrial companies all over the world.

The fourth day of the course is an optional day for an excursion.
