Real Time Control
Real Time Control
Real time control (RTC) is used in rivers, channels and sewerage systems to improve functioning of these systems by efficient control of structures. With SOBEK-Rural RTC you can design and simulate control to optimize your water system. During the one day course you will work with SOBEK-Rural RTC in combination with SOBEK-Rural 1DFLOW. Aim of this course is to extend your modelling toolkit with real time control and to improve your modelling skills.
Course background
Real Time Control is dedicated to SOBEK-Rural RTC. You define the operation of structures (gates, weirs, pumps) as a function of water levels, depths, discharges, (anticipated) rainfall, water quality substance concentrations on a number of locations in your system. RTC enables you to intervene in events taking place within your water system by adjusting structure operation, and it helps you to make informed choices about automation and the best control strategy. SOBEK-Rural RTC is used in combination with SOBEK-Rural 1DFLOW, SOBEK-River 1DFLOW, SOBEK-WQ and/or SOBEK-Rural RR. It can also use information from Sobek-WQ, and can be linked to Matlab.
Participants
The course is aimed at river engineers and modellers from consultancy and engineering companies,
provinces, water boards, municipalities and universities. Experience of the course participants with the SOBEKRural 1DFLOW module is essential. Experience in control theory or the use of the SOBEK-Rural RTC module is preferred, but not essential.
Aim of the course
The aim of the Real Time Control course is to give you more background in the possibilities of SOBEK related to (real time) control of structures. The first part of the course elaborates on theoretical backgrounds, local control versus global control, and types of local controllers (such as the PID controller) and triggers. There is an exercise on the use of local controllers in the SOBEK-Rural 1DFLOW module showing the typical behaviour of various controllers. Then attention shifts to global control using the SOBEKRural RTC module. Control objectives and how they be realised are discussed, and a number of practical examples from projects all over the world are given. An exercise elaborates on the use of SOBEK-Rural RTC together with Matlab, to program your own control rules. After following the course, you understand the control possibilities in SOBEK-Rural 1DFLOW itself and their limitations. You also understand when to use the SOBEK—Rural RTC module and have gained experience in using it.
