Inland Water Systems

Surface water and groundwater quality is a crucial factor for both aquatic ecosystems and beneficial uses of water resources. One of the biggest water management challenges, therefore, is to improve and preserve water quality.

Deltares works together with water managers to implement the European Water Framework Directive. By studying the effects of restoration measures we strive to realise the intended ecological objectives and ensure healthy groundwater and clean rivers for now and in the future.

In addition, Deltares characterises the water quality risks of climate change. We study how climate change affects the ecological functioning of water systems. Furthermore, we investigate the feasibility of adaptation measures in ecological restoration and nature development.

Innovations in water management are needed to make living and working in deltas, coastal areas and river areas safe, clean and sustainable. We develop and test innovative water management measures while taking into account socio-economic developments.
