Eco-engineering
Increasing demand on space in delta areas, combined with external threats such as climate change, accelerated sea level rise and subsidence, ask for new multi-functional approaches in water management. Healthy ecosystems and good water quality are crucial for economic activities and guarantee a good quality of living. The challenge is to incorporate ecosystem functions right from the start of the design process and to develop multi-purpose engineering designs. This requires a new way of thinking, and specific knowledge and expertise in the field of eco-engineering.
Building with Nature and eco-engineering focus on the use of natural processes and ecosystem services to ensure safety, human well-being, economic development and healthy ecosystems in delta areas through multifunctional use of space.
Building with Nature projects are realised through an integrated vision, design and building process. Stakeholders from different disciplines work together in developing an optimal multifunctional and sustainable solution. The challenge is to integrate the dynamic behaviour of nature in the process, as this behaviour can be difficult to predict. This requires a new way of thinking and interaction, which Deltares experts integrate into water management practices. Our aim is not only to create, but also to share knowledge. In our experience, projects can be realised in a cost-effective manner, producing a positive cost-benefit balance, while substantially increasing benefits for nature, human well-being and economic opportunities. Let’s join forces and make Building with Nature common practice!
