Laboratories
Sustainable life in the delta is impossible without hard facts. Field samples and laboratory tests can provide that data. Typical measurements cover the chemical and ecological quality of groundwater and surface water, as well as the possibility of settlement flows in borrow pits, and the analysis of soil properties before the construction of dikes, construction pits or harbours.
In-situ bioremediation uses the capacity of bacteria to degrade contaminants at contaminated sites for a better soil and groundwater quality. The Deltares Bioremediation Lab researches both degradation under natural conditions (Natural Attenuation) and the stimulation of microbial degradation.
The composition of water is analysed in the Water Quality laboratory: groundwater as well as surface water, process water, seawater and interstitial water from sediments.
Deltares researches the interactions at the interface between water and sediment and analyses both the solid matter as well as the water.
The Deltares Laboratory for Microbial Diversity conducts research into the microbiological composition of a system and how that determines the functions of the soil system.
