Cooperation Agreement Deltares and IDEAM
On Friday 22 June in Bogotá, Deltares signed an agreement with IDEAM. This is the Colombian Institute for meteorology, hydrology and environment and a sister institute of Deltares. This cooperation is an important step forward in the sharing of knowledge on water management. These include knowledge about hydrological modelling, climate change and forecasting systems. The cooperation also involves UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education.
IDEAM gathers knowledge about the natural system and the hydro-meteorological conditions in Colombia to improve decision-making on water management. The many floods in Colombia during the winters of 2010 and 2011 proved that the knowledge on water management needed to be strengthened and consequently, the contact with Deltares was intensified. This in turn led to the recently signed cooperation agreement.
The agreement is in line with the policies of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and EL & I. Colombia, together with South Africa and Vietnam has been designated as a transition country. This means that in the coming years there will be intensive investment in these countries to transform the traditional development relationship into a bilateral economic cooperation.
