Junior System Integrator for the FORCOAST project

Our Unit Marine and Coastal Systems is looking for a talented and enthusiastic Junior System Integrator for the FORCOAST project for a period of 2.5 years.


As a Junior System Integrator you will coordinate and perform research tasks in a new European Horizon2020 research project FORCOAST: Earth Observation services for Fishery, Oysterground restoration and bivalve maRiculture along European COASTs. FORCOAST aims to provide information services that offer high resolution water quality and met-ocean indicators in coastal and nearshore areas, to improve operation, planning and management of different marine activities in the sectors of wild fisheries, oystergrounds restoration, and bivalve mariculture.

What can you expect as a Junior System Integrator for a period of 2.5 years?

You will have an important technical and coordinating role in the FORCOAST project in developing, testing and demonstrating, in operational mode, novel Copernicus-based downstream information services. The services will integrate Copernicus Earth Observation Products with local models and other diverse data sources (local, regional or global) with ICT (enhancing new frontiers opened by web, and use of cloud) across the different market segments. You will work with stakeholders from business as well as international researchers to define and provide consistent coastal data products and information services, based on a standardized data processing scheme. One of your main activities will be to explore options and lead development of the ‘FORCOAST platform’, an advanced platform and cloud computing system for Copernicus-based downstream services utilizing one of the DIAS systems. The FORCOAST platform will support information services in eight pilot sites covering five different regional waters (North Sea, Baltic Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and the coastal Atlantic Ocean).

What does Deltares expect from you as an Junior System Integrator for a period of 2.5 years?

As a Junior System Integrator you should have an interest in the development of real-time water quality forecasting systems in coastal areas and marine systems. This involves the integration of (hydrodynamic and water quality) models, Remote sensing and other measurement data and ICT components in real-time operational systems. You will be a member of a team at Deltares, as well as an international project team working on the 8 pilot services. It is important that you work well within a team, at Deltares as well within the international FORCOAST project team. You also take initiative, can work independently, and ensure you complete tasks you are responsible for.

  • You have a master’s degree in hydrodynamics, water quality or another environmental discipline, with interest and skills in information technology, ICT systems, data processing, data science and/or modelling techniques;
  • You are fluent in English (reading, writing and speaking, including giving presentations in meetings);
  • You have good organizational skills and can give instructions to others;
  • You are able and willing to travel to foreign countries and work with international researchers and companies;
  • You can start on November 1, 2019.
