Conservation International and Deltares are advancing Green-Grey Infrastructure (GGI) in the North Brazil Shelf region to strengthen coastal resilience and support national adaptation planning. Building on previous coastal typologies, this report presents conceptual GGI interventions for Guyana and Suriname, where migrating mudbanks strongly influence coastal dynamics.
This report outlines requirements for a resilient mangrove green belt. A self-sustaining belt should be around 1,000 m wide: 500 m to accommodate erosion during interbank phases and 500 m to attenuate waves and support flood protection. Narrower belts require additional erosion-control measures.
Additionally, this report provides guidance on selecting, designing, and maintaining GGI interventions tailored to coastal typologies and mudbank-cycle stages. It recommends site-specific assessments, stakeholder engagement, long-term monitoring, and knowledge sharing to optimise coastal resilience outcomes.
