Dr. Alessio Giardino is a senior coastal engineer with broad experience in coastal and estuarine morphodynamics. His 13 years of experience in specialized consultancy and research in coastal and estuarine management includes national and international projects dealing with coastal erosion, coastal protection, sustainable coastal development and identification and design of suitable coastal protection measures, based on system understanding, numerical modelling and data analysis. Among those measures, the use of hard structures combined with an eco-engineering (Building-with-Nature) approach against coastal erosion. One of his specific interests and expertise area relates to projects in development countries, to assess the impact of climate change on the physical system and the local populations, in a wider framework of Integrated Coastal Zone Management. In particular, he has been working in this field as expert and advisor for the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and several national governments in several projects in Africa, Asia and South America. Countries of work experience include: Bangladesh, Belgium, Colombia, Denmark, Georgia, India, Italy, Russian Federation, Sao Tome and Principe, Turkey.

He graduated at the Faculty of Engineering in Turin in 2003. He was awarded this degree cum laude with a thesis on “Tidal numerical simulations” carried out at the Hydraulics Laboratory of the Katholieke University of Leuven (KULeuven, Belgium). In 2003, he enrolled for a PhD program at the KULeuven on numerical modelling of sand banks and estuaries morphodynamics. He graduated with a Ph.D. in 2008. In 2008, he worked as a researcher at the Hydraulics Laboratory of the KULeuven. From November 2008, he joined the staff of Deltares as consultant and researcher in the field of coastal and estuarine morphodynamics. Next to his advisory role in consultancy projects, his strong international network is used by Deltares for the development of an international marketing strategy related to coastal, estuarine and river morphodynamics.

He has published several articles on a number of international Journals and conference proceedings, participating to a large number of international conferences and scientific meetings. He is also involved in the steering committees of a number of international networks among which the MEDCOAST Foundation (Mediterranenan Coastal Foundation, in quality of coastal protection and ICZM expert) and the NANO network (NF-POGO Alumni Network for Oceans).
