Award for Deltares Salt Water App
Published: 29 September 2014
The app was devised in response to the problem of salinisation, which is becoming increasingly urgent for farmers and water management authorities in coastal areas. Climate change is the underlying cause. The app provides information about the electrical conductivity of the water, and the analysis of the data provides indications about where salinisation is occurring. That allows the users to take specific measures, for example by storing fresh water underground.
The awards were handed out on 25 September during the international conference ‘Deltas in Times of Climate Change’ in Rotterdam. The competition was organised by the Knowledge for Climate and Climate-KIC knowledge programmes. The Deltares team consisted of Marta Faneca Sànchez (who presented the project), Ester van Baaren, Gualbert Oude Essink, Mike van de Werf and Eric Lammertsma.
