Climate adaptation in Taiwan

Published: 14 July 2015

A delegation of Taiwanese government bodies, including the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA), has visited Deltares to share knowledge about climate adaptation. The delegation was attending a summer school about climate change at the College of Europe in Bruges.

The visit to Deltares was included in the programme in response to a specific request from Taiwan. The delegation was led by the EPA Deputy Minister, Tzi-Chin Chang. Minister Chang studied at the National Chiao Tung University. That is the university with whom Deltares has had an agreement since 2012 and with whom we are working on a number of projects.

The need for climate change adaptation in Taiwan is clearly felt, primarily because of the regular floods. Climate mitigation was recently introduced in legislation but the search is still in progress for a feasible approach to adaptation. So there was considerable interest in tools such as 3Di, the Drought Stress Model, the Climate Adaptation App and the Adaptation Support Tool. All this could lead to a new step forward in our partnership.

The visit concluded with a tour of the research facilities.
