Innovative SMEs wanted for the Deltares SME Challenge 2026
Many innovative ideas start small: at a workbench, in a start-up, or within an SME that has a smart solution for a major societal challenge. But a good idea alone is not enough. The step from innovation to real-world application requires knowledge, testing opportunities and the right partners. That is exactly where the Deltares SME Challenge comes in.
Registration Open
Registration for the Deltares SME Challenge 2026 is now open. Until 31 May 2026, SMEs and start-ups can submit innovative solutions addressing challenges related to water, the subsurface and climate.
With the SME Challenge, Deltares offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to take their innovation to the next level: from a promising concept to a well-substantiated and tested solution. Participants gain free access to our research facilities as well as guidance from our experts. This includes testing in the Wave and Flow Facilities, Geotechnical Facilities and the Delta Lab. The aim is to accelerate innovations that contribute to challenges such as flood protection, climate adaptation, sustainability and nature restoration.
For previous participants, the SME Challenge proved to be a crucial step towards practical implementation. Testing their innovation in a realistic environment provided valuable insights into performance, scalability and potential applications – as well as how their solution can deliver real societal impact.
From Idea to Collaboration
The Deltares SME Challenge is intended for companies with a clearly defined innovative idea that fits within Deltares’ areas of expertise. After registration, promising submissions are selected and invited to present their innovation to a jury of Deltares experts. Based on this assessment, it is determined which initiatives will start the Challenge programme.
The evaluation considers factors such as expected impact, technical and practical feasibility, and relevance to societal challenges. It also assesses whether the innovation aligns with Deltares’ knowledge and capacity and offers prospects for further development.

A great example of an SME Challenge participant is Reefy. At Deltares, Reefy tested the stability and wave‑attenuating performance of their Reef Enhancing Breakwater: modular artificial reef elements that combine coastal protection with nature restoration. The tests were carried out under controlled wave conditions in our hydro‑facilities.
