‘The topics tackled by Deltares are more urgent than ever,’ explains the Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management, Cora van Nieuwenhuizen, in this edition of Delta Life. Our organisation celebrated its tenth anniversary this year and our top man Maarten Smits discusses with Delta Commissioner Wim Kuijken the challenges that our institutes will face in the coming decades.

And how can we manage global issues like climate change, water scarcity and sea level rise? Futurologist Christian Kromme believes the answer can be found in technological innovations, while philosopher Haroon Sheikh is calling for a moral revolution.

Now that large parts of Europe have been affected by drought during the summer and the autumn, this edition of our Delta Life magazine also looks for answers to the question of how we can cope with the associated challenges better. In addition, we look at the joint study by management authorities, private bodies and research institutes of ways to repair Dutch dikes quickly, cheaply and intelligently. ‘There is already global interest in the results,’ says programme manager Martin Schepers.
