Development of a Flood Early Warning System and an Adaptive Flood Risk Management plan for Sukhothai district / Yom River Basin
The main goals of the joint Deltares – Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute (HAII) project ‘Development of a Flood Early Warning System and an adaptive flood risk management plan for Sukhothai / Yom River Basin’ was to:
- Develop the FEWS system for flood forecasting and flood early warning in Sukhothai Province / Yom River Basin;
- Develop an Adaptive Flood Risk Management plan for Sukhothai Province, and
- Develop staff capability in the FEWS system development, as well as flood management skills.
Future flood risk will be affected by climate change and economic developments. To account for the uncertainty in such developments a couple of scenarios have been compiled based on available information. Measures for mitigation of flood risk have been identified. The hydrologic / hydraulic model (WFLOW – SOBEK) was used to assess the impacts on flood risk from a wide range of storage, diversion and protection measures. To assess effectiveness in risk reduction flood risk indicators have been defined which integrate information on flood characteristics and land use.
