Analysis of unintended groundwater drainage in New Orleans caused by leaking sewer and stormwater pipes, combined with groundwater recharge from drinking water losses. Monitoring data and impulse-response modelling quantify fluxes within the urban water balance and show that groundwater levels are largely controlled by subsurface infrastructure. Recommends integrating French drains during pipe renovations to manage groundwater levels and reduce flooding risks.
