overview of the current development of the artificial intelligence (AI) technology for operational systems at Deltares

This report, created as part of the “SITO‑PS MAD06 RWsOS” project, informs stakeholders and colleagues about ongoing AI innovations relevant to the Rijkswaterstaat clustered operational systems. It summarizes current Deltares developments using AI for RWsOS and the internal “AI for Improving Flood Forecasting (AI4FF)” research program. The findings show clear progress in both technological maturity—moving from exploratory trials to robust, generalizable methods—and in the growing use of AI across the full forecasting chain. Organizational support is also increasing, with improved infrastructure, data access, coordination, and collaboration, supported by an active internal Data Science & AI community and strong ties to universities. Looking ahead, Deltares aims to advance its Scientific Machine Learning strategy and prepare demonstrators for DSD 2025, using this report to align initiatives and guide strategic decisions
