Course EnergyPLAN – Advanced Energy System Analysis
Many decisions to increase the share of renewables are taken at a local or regional level, but many of these organisations do not have tools to plan the energy transition at the municipal or provincial scale. Similar energy transition decisions had to be taken in Denmark 2 or 3 decades ago. Aalborg University has been developing the EnergyPLAN Tool (www.energyplan.eu) for advanced energy system analysis for two decades. Nowadays EnergyPLAN is a worldwide used tool to support energy system analysis and planning at all relevant scales: municipal, regional and national.
Therefore, Deltares has invited Aalborg University to give a 2-day course on the practical use of EnergyPLAN in the Dutch context, in order to support decisions making in the energy transition at all relevant spatial scales.
The course gives an introduction to advanced energy system analysis using the EnergyPLAN tool. After the course the participants are expected to be able to understand methodologies of advanced energy system analysis and to be able to use the EnergyPLAN computer model as a tool in making energy system analysis. The idea is to combine inspiration from lectures with work on your own analysis. Supervisors will be present in the room while working with the model.
The course is conducted as a hands-on course based on EnergyPLAN model with national and regional/municipal examples. Participants will gain enough knowledge to start modelling their own (regional, municipal) energy system. Remember to bring a computer to work on your own case during the training!
The Danish version of the course has been conducted in Denmark every year since 2005. During the course, there will be plenty of time to exchange views and experiences with other participants.
All people, involved in decision making and planning of the future energy mix. This includes civil servants from municipalities, provinces and ministries, consultants and strategic planners from energy companies, as well as PhD students on energy policies.
The course will be lectured by experienced lecturers and EnergyPlan-users from Aalborg University:
- Susana Paardekooper (with Dutch background)
- Jakob Zinck Thellufsen

Participants are expected to make some preparations prior to the course
- Install EnergyPLAN from www.energyplan.eu
- Consider how you wish to use EnergyPLAN
- Read the FIDE guide (Finding and inputting data to EnergyPLAN) from energyplan.eu and consider what data you will need to do 2.
- There are a number of training exercises at energyplan.eu You are strongly encouraged / expected to do these beforehand as this
will enable you to make more advanced independent analyses during the actual course
- Read 5 background articles on EnergyPLAN (to be supplied a month before the course)
