Dirk-Jan Walstra
Dirk Jan Walstra graduated as a Civil Engineer (Msc.) from Delft University of Technology in 1994, after which he spent two years working for CSIR in South Africa and undertaking coastal engineering consultancy projects related to coastal zone management, sand nourishments for the diamond mining industry in Namibia and habour extensions in South Africa, Mozambique and the Middle East. He joined Delft Hydraulics (now part of Deltares) as a coastal morphologist in 1996 and has been involved in numerous Dutch and international projects in the coastal zone in both a consultancy and research capacity. His specialist coastal modelling expertise means that he continues to play a key role in the development of the morphological models Delft3D and Unibest. In addition, he has led programmes within a number of EU-sponsored Marine Science and Technology research projects focussing on nearshore coastal hydrodynamic and morphologic processes and the effects of sand mining (SASME, COAST3D and SANDPIT) and has been involved in large scale projects in the USA (such as post-Katrina projects in Louisiana and coastal stabilization projects in Florida). Currently he is the Deltares program manager for the Mississippi Coastal Improvement Program.
Since 2005 he also holds a research associateship at Delft University of Technology and is an invited lecturer at Utrecht University (since 2004) and Twente University (since 2008).
He has published about 30 journal articles, more than 50 conference papers and has delivered key note presentations at several international conferences and workshops. He has supervised over 50 Msc students, 10 Phd students and has been an invited member on several international Phd committees.
