About Cihan Cengiz

Dr. Cihan Cengiz bridges advanced geotechnical research and practical engineering solutions, with expertise in soil–water–structure interactions, offshore renewables, earthquake geotechnics, and both physical and numerical modelling. His work integrates fundamental research with applied consultancy, delivering innovative, high-impact solutions that enhance the resilience and performance of critical infrastructure worldwide.

He holds a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering with a specialism in soil dynamics and has established a strong track record in seismic design and the dynamic performance of geotechnical systems. He combines extensive experience in advanced numerical modelling with a reputation as an inventive physical modeller. Over his career, he has advanced centrifuge modelling techniques and offshore geotechnics, supporting the design, testing, and certification of novel foundation and reinforcement solutions for the energy and infrastructure sectors.

At Deltares, he contributes to multidisciplinary projects that demand deep technical expertise and rigorous experimental and analytical approaches. He is an active member of several international professional bodies, including ISSMGE Technical Committees TC 104 (Physical Modelling), TC 203 (Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering), TC 204 (Underground Construction), TC 209 (Offshore Geotechnics), TC 218 (Reinforced Fill Structures), and the TC-R Technical Committee on Reinforcement of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS). He is also a member of the Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). In addition, he serves as Associate Editor for Geotextiles and Geomembranes, helping shape research directions and ensuring the publication of high-quality contributions in geosynthetics and geotechnical engineering.
