About Laurene Bouaziz

Laurène Bouaziz is a senior hydrologist at Deltares, the Dutch knowledge institute on water and subsurface. She focuses on hydrological modelling, climate change adaptation and operational forecasting. In 2021, she defended her PhD thesis on internal processes in hydrological models and focused particularly on the Meuse basin. During her PhD, she embarked on a cycling journey along the river Meuse and since then she developed a strong affinity with this whimsical river. In her role as member of the forecasting service of the Water Management Centre of the Netherlands, she makes operational forecasts to predict river flows in the Meuse and the Rhine, and for the European Flood Awareness System. Growing up in a multicultural environment in France sparked her interest in traveling and exploring the world, a passion she is able to actively pursue at Deltares. She is fascinated by understanding the behaviour of river basins worldwide and the complex interactions between vegetation and hydrology. With a strong technical background, she enjoys developing tools to simulate the hydrological functioning of river basins and quantify water availability in the future.

She is a native French and Dutch speaker, fluent in English and she has a basic level of Spanish. Over the past years, she has led several projects in which she favour an open and positive working atmosphere. Laurène is valued for her social skills, and her communication skills ensure effective collaboration. She enjoys connecting with clients and colleagues to understand their needs and provide guidance to address hydrological issues in the Meuse and beyond. In the future, she wants to expand her involvement in the international Meuse network, make use of her bilingual abilities during crisis in the Meuse when clear communication is essential, continue working on Meuse-related and international hydrological projects, enhance her technical expertise in the development of hydrological tools, and intensify her mentoring role.
