About Peter Jansson
Peter Jansson is a Thai-Norwegian researcher/consultant in the fields of water resource management and climate adaptation. He has a BSc degree in Economics and Finance and an MSc in Hydrology and Water Resources from Wageningen University. There, he wrote his MSc thesis on “The potential of qualitative field observations to improve model structure adequacy”, where the performance of a globally-parameterised hydrological model was compared to that of a unique model developed purely from interviewing local inhabitants on past floods and droughts. He then finalised his studies with an internship at Deltares for the French railways SNCF, analysing whether floods on the French railways could be predicted in advance.
As a hydro-economist, he works on evaluating socio-economic impacts of floods and droughts, having also taken equity- and systems-based perspectives. This work is undertaken in projects as well as in the International Delta Toolset being developed under Moonshot 1.
He applies his diverse background and interdisciplinary skills to various projects. He is active in the development and applications of Ribasim to address water management challenges in various countries, including Thailand. He is also involved analysing complex multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder issues using System Dynamics; applications include innovative infrastructure renewal and the integration of nature-based solutions. Moreover, he is currently leading an initiative to further map participatory approaches used to understand links between climate, water and conflict in order to identify success factors for effective stakeholder engagement.
Projects Peter is involved in:
- System dynamic modelling for RWS
- Socio-economic impacts for international delta toolset
- Participatory approaches in climate-water-conflict nexus
- Ribasim development for RID-SWAMP (Thailand)
- UNHCR Impact assessment of floods on refugee camps in East Africa
