About Reinier Schrijvershof
Reinier Schrijvershof is a researcher and consultant in the field of coastal and, specifically, estuarine morphology. He has more than 10 years of experience in leading and participating in Deltares consultancy projects related to the morphodynamic functioning of estuaries (for example the Ems-Dollard estuary) and tidal basins (for example the Wadden Sea).
His main focus area is the impact of human interventions on estuarine system-scale functioning. Tidal systems worldwide are impacted by humans to keep the hinterland safe from flooding, accessible for economic activities, while they also functioning as highly diverse and valuable ecological landscapes. The impact of current and new proposed human activities on these ecosystem services can be severe and needs to be quantified for sustainable management decisions. Reinier his expert knowledge on tidal processes, sediment dynamics, and morphodynamic feedback loops, combined with 10 years of experience in morphodynamic (numerical) modelling provides the capacity to assess and advise on the impact of such measures.
Currently, he combines his partial appointment at Deltares with a PhD research where he studies the role of the intertidal areas (the lands inundating and drying during the tidal cycle) on estuarine system-scale morphodynamic evolution.
Key projects
- Sediments of the Halligen: Developing tidal flat nourishments as coastal protection measure for the Halligen islands in the German North Frisian Wadden Sea, funded by the German Landesbetrieb fur Kustenschuts, Nationalpark und Meeresschutz Schleswig-Holstein (LKN.SH)
- Ems harbor - North Sea fairway: Assessment on causes and consequences of maintenance dredging in the Ems harbor access channel, funded by Rijkswaterstaat
- Long Term Monitoring, Research and Analysis of the Bangladesh Coastal Zone: developing a framework for folder design for sustainable polder management, based on understanding of the long-term and large-scale delta dynamics. Funded by the Ministry of Bangladesh
