About Sam Maijvis

Sam Maijvis is an applied physicist who started working at Deltares in 2022 as an advisor and researcher on the topic of hydraulic structures. During his master’s degree in Applied Physics at Eindhoven University of Technology (2022) he focused on fluid dynamics and transport phenomena.

At Deltares, Sam mainly works on questions regarding weirs, navigation locks, sluice gates and storm surge barriers. In addition to the hydraulics, he also works on themes such as salt intrusion (for example: selective withdrawal and the “Sea Lock Formulation”), fish migration and the role of hydraulic structures in the greater water system. He has also contributed to emergency advice for calamities that occurred at weirs in the River Meuse.

He is interested in both fundamental fluid dynamics and its practical applications in hydraulic engineering. He likes to work on these themes using data-driven analysis, numerical models and by measuring & monitoring fluid phenomena.
