About Siep Bakker
Siep Bakker is an advisor in flood risk management and river management within the Flood Risk Management department. He completed a Bachelor's degree in Future Planet Studies at the University of Amsterdam, with a major in Earth Sciences. This program places strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research into the effects of climate change on land, water, and energy. He then pursued a Master's in Hydrology, which he concluded with a thesis on testing a 2D GPU-based model in the Geul river basin.
At Deltares, Siep is currently mainly involved in flood safety studies for the Meuse and Rhine rivers. A central question in his work is: “How can we best discharge higher river flows resulting from climate change through our water system?”. To help answer this question, he contributes to projects on flow distribution at the bifurcation points of the Rhine branches, hydraulic bottlenecks and river widening.
