About Tom Bosma
Tom Bosma has extensive experience in researching soil and water quality and biological solutions for soil and groundwater remediation. After completing his PhD research, he has held various roles in research organizations, including senior researcher at the Swiss EAWAG, project leader and manager at TNO, head of the Geolab at Utrecht University, and researcher at WUR. He is an experienced manager of public-private projects, with an open eye for the interests of the various stakeholders. His motto in project research is: “Together we are stronger.”
He has been working at Deltares since 2022. There, he is involved in soil remediation projects and leads extensive research into the fate of PFAS in soil and water and possibilities for biological removal. The focus is on the removal of PFAS by plants, microbial degradation, and the effects of this on environmental quality. The Deltalab, with its advanced facilities, plays a prominent role in his work. Here, research questions about soil and water quality can be investigated and methods for the removal of substances can be tested.
Tom participates in international networks. For example, he is involved in the PFAS working group of NICOLE, a leading European network for sustainable land use. Starting in September 2025, he will chair the academic subgroup focused on forming new consortia for innovative research. He is also involved in the NICOLE Academy, which is committed to training young professionals so that accumulated knowledge and experience are preserved.
