My work is relevant to the major challenges in this world
Every day at Deltares we work on solutions to complex societal challenges. The digital facilities at Deltares play an indispensable role in our mission. We develop software and data products that make our knowledge accessible and impactful in practice - from flood forecasting to smart monitoring of flood defences such as the Maeslant Barrier. Matthijs Huisman is a DevOps engineer and scrum master at Deltares. What inspires him about working here? We asked Matthijs: “What drives you?”

Bridging the gap
I’ve been at Deltares in a dual role since October 2023. As a scrum master, I am a process supervisor in a team where I ensure that the team functions properly. As a DevOps engineer, I bridge the gap between the development teams and software users.

From dyke reinforcement to Deltares
I grew up in a village along the River Lek and vividly remember the moment when the dyke there had to be reinforced. Deltares was involved in that project, and it caught my attention. Although I have a background in software and didn’t initially consider water management or ‘enabling delta life’ when looking for a job, I now thoroughly enjoy working at Deltares. It’s rewarding to see how I can apply my knowledge and experience here in a meaningful way.
A conscious choice for societal impact
There are plenty of places I could work, but I’ve made a conscious choice to work at Deltares. It’s an organisation that genuinely strives to make a difference, one with ideals and a clear vision for the future. That matters to me.
I believe technology plays a key role in keeping our deltas liveable. Smart software enables us to respond more quickly to threats and plan more effectively for the long term.

Life below sea level
We used to go on holiday to the coast when I was a child. I have such fond memories of those times. They come flooding back whenever I visit my parents in the village where I grew up. Driving along the dyke there, and seeing the water and the difference in height compared to the land, really makes me think. You can clearly see that the water level in the River Lek is higher than where people live. It’s not something we should take for granted, with so many of us living below sea level. I now realise just how much effort and expertise it takes to make that possible.
Software that makes a difference
At times all that can feel a bit distant when I’m working at the office, but the software we develop has a wide range of real-world applications. For example, it’s delivered to Rijkswaterstaat, where it’s used in an early warning system to detect potential floods at an early stage. So it’s highly relevant.
As a DevOps engineer, I collaborate with experts from completely different fields. That brings fresh perspectives and makes the work truly meaningful.

Our department also writes software for the Maeslant Barrier. I currently live in Maassluis, and the Maeslant Barrier recently closed when there was a very strong storm. I went to look at the harbour that evening and saw the water continuing to rise. The barrier closed. Later, I saw the water level recede. It was all working. Suddenly my work hit very close to home.

Concerns and hopes for the future
I sometimes worry about how we treat each other and our planet. If you look at the past, we’ve destroyed a lot as humanity. However, we’ve also managed to save it. I think we should do the same now, but with a little more consideration for our environment – such as biodiversity –, for humanity, for the earth.
Vacancies
For developers, data scientists, and architects who want their work to make a real impact, Deltares offers a unique environment: multidisciplinary, mission-driven, and focused on innovation that truly matters. Curious how you could use your talents to help shape a better future? Deltares has several vacancies. Will you be joining Matthijs and the team?
