About Bart Maas

Bart Maas is a flood risk and water safety expert at the Flood Risk Management department of Deltares. With a background in physical geography focused on rivers and coasts, he combines scientific insight with practical applications in hydrodynamic modelling and integrated river management.

Bart contributes to projects covering both fluvial and pluvial flooding, such as supra-regional stress tests, Room for the River (2.0), and the development and evaluation of water safety standards. His work bridges research and societal relevance, aiming to ensure that knowledge gained through studies leads to meaningful insights and solutions for major societal challenges now and in the ever-changing future.

One of his recent contributions is to the supra-regional stress tests, which for the first time provides a coherent overview of potential flooding caused by widespread extreme rainfall across different regions in The Netherlands. This study reveals key lessons, such as the persistence of shallow flooding in low-lying areas and deeper accumulations near streams in higher regions, and marks a crucial first step in improving our water awareness and preparedness for such events.
