About Bas Stengs

With over 12 years of experience in hydrodynamic forecasting and project management, Bas Stengs has been involved in many different studies, with a particular focus on flood early warning, integrated coastal zone management and forecasting metocean conditions. He has in-depth experience in developing and implementing Delft-FEWS based forecasting systems for coastal areas and inland water systems.

From 2018-2020, Bas Stengs was stationed in Vietnam as a hydrodynamic consultant. Here he worked on different topics, mainly related to flood early warning, salinity intrusion and nearshore/offshore wind. Ever since, Bas Stengs is frequently involved in multi-hazard (TA) studies, throughout Asia, Africa and Europe.

In The Netherlands, Bas Stengs is an experienced project leader and a co-creator of Early Warning Systems for the Dutch government. For instance, under the WaterCoach project (a serious gaming tool to practice flood procedures) and under the BOS-VZM project (a Decision Support Tool to minimize salinity intrusion for a Dutch lake called Volkerak-Zoom). In the period of 2013 - 2023 he was leading and co-developing the Dutch governmental flood early warning system for lake IJsselmeer and lake Markermeer (RWsOS-Meren). This system provides water level estimates and predicts wave conditions, wave run-up and overtopping for hundreds of dike sections. These operational water management systems (RWsOS-Meren, BOS-VZM, WaterCoach) are actively used by a team of professional water managers (for example WMCN, HMC and ZD). Third party’s like water boards, the national committee of flooding (LCO) and operators of hydraulic structures are active users of these downstream services.

During his career, Bas Stengs worked on the energy transition in the maritime industry as a project leader and system developer. For example, optimizing offshore workability for offshore windfarms (in JIP partnerships) and improving offshore navigation to reduce emissions (under various TKI projects). Furthermore, Bas Stengs has experience in assessing geotechnical stability for offshore windfarms by means of physical modelling tests, numerical analysis and writing consultancy reports.

Since 2022, Bas Stengs is an active board member of Deltares' Works Council (OR). He started as the secretary and is currently (since 2025) appointed as the chair of a group of 14 members. Relevant topics are the organisational change (how Deltares is structured and organized), finances&strategy and CSR-choices within Deltares.
