Henriëtte is an expert on dealing with challenges in the domain of governance and the science-policy interface. She has worked as an advisor on integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) with experience in the Netherlands and abroad. As a researcher, Henriëtte has been involved in large-scale interdisciplinary research projects dealing with governance issues, the socio-economic impacts of climate change on coastal areas and the use of economic instruments in flood control. As a consultant she has provided advice on integrated solutions for a range of coastal and estuarine management issues including the analysis of the interactions between human and natural systems, integrated assessment of effects of interventions and the use of evaluation techniques in coastal studies.
From 2003 to 2007 Henriëtte held a part-time position at University of Twente as assistant professor Water Management in the department of Water Engineering and Management. She has acted as co-promotor for one PhD candidate and is currently supervising two PhD project on the topic of ‘knowledge in decision-making’. Henriëtte Otter holds an M.Sc. degree in Public Policy and Water Management (1995) and a Ph.D. degree in Integrated assessment and modelling (2000).

Rise and Fall: strategies for the subsiding and urbanising Mekong Delta (Vietnam) facing increasing salt water intrusion.
The Netherlands/ Vietnam, 2014-present
This research project aims to enhance the capabilities of individuals and organisations to develop sustainable strategies for dealing with groundwater extraction, land subsidence and salt water intrusion in the increasingly urbanising Mekong Delta (Vietnam). The Postdoc focuses on 1) Study of local governance strategies for ground water extraction, subsidence and salt water intrusion, and 2) Governance challenges for the near future and most promising strategies to deal with problems of subsidence and salt water intrusion.
