Deltares' first sustainability report
With our knowledge of water and the subsurface, Deltares contributes to safe and sustainable living in deltas worldwide. We work every day to have a positive impact on people, the environment and society, which means that corporate social responsibility is in our DNA. The work we do also has an impact on people, the environment and society, sometimes unintentionally. Our first Corporate Social Responsibility report shows how we minimise that impact.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is inherent to the work of Deltares. At the heart of our mission-driven work is our ambition to make a social impact; we therefore encourage governments, businesses and others to apply our knowledge. Through our research and advice, we contribute to keeping deltas, coastal and river areas safe, sustainable and liveable. We report on the impact of our work in the Impact Report.
Minimising climate impact
We want to carry out our research and advisory projects in such a way that we limit negative effects on people, the environment and society and minimise our climate impact. To this end, we undertake numerous activities, such as making our business operations more sustainable. At our campus in Delft, we are heating and cooling more and more buildings using a thermal energy storage system, we generate our own electricity with solar panels and are experimenting with sustainable batteries to store surplus electricity, such as the AquaBattery.
You can read how we do this in our first Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report. In it, we describe our ambitions and results in terms of the environmental impact of our business operations. But we also describe how we treat our employees, how we conduct socially responsible research, how we share knowledge with society and what partnerships we have and are entering into. In doing so, we focus on the impact over which we ourselves have direct influence. In future reports, we want to take the step towards the impact we have through our procurement and projects.
"For Deltares, good work means developing and applying specialist knowledge about water and the subsurface. This is urgently needed to keep our deltas liveable. Good work also means doing good. That means being aware of our own, sometimes unintended, impact on people and the environment. We want to do the right thing and be transparent about what we do and how we do it."
Annemieke Nijhof, Director of Deltares

We also see this report as a way to challenge ourselves and be challenged to continuously improve our work. That is why we continuously discuss our CSR ambitions and results within our organisation and with our stakeholders.
