Ap van Dongeren
Dr. Ap van Dongeren received his M.Sc. from Delft University of Technology in 1992, where he developed a morphological tidal inlet model. In August 1997, he graduated with a Ph.D. in Coastal Engineering from the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware, U.S.A., where he developed a nearshore circulation model, which is capable of describing long waves and currents near an ocean beach. From September 1997 to December 1999, he had a joint appointment at WL|DELFT HYDRAULICS and Delft University of Technology. He was involved in both fundamental research in the field of waves and currents in the nearshore region and wave generation and absorption in the laboratory environment, and in applied ocean and coastal engineering consultancy. From January 2000, he has a fulltime position as senior researcher and later specialist at WL|DELFT HYDRAULICS, now Deltares. His interests are wave generation, observation and analysis in laboratory environments, as well as numerical modelling of infragravity waves, nearshore morphology and dune erosion.
Ap van Dongeren has been projectleader on a number of national and international projects for the Dutch government, waterboards, the Office of Naval Research and the European Union. Most recently, he has led a project team to improve the performance of SWAN (a wave action model) in a tidal inlet sea in order to derive more reliable wave boundary conditions. He has been WorkPackage Leader for the MICORE project which has developed dune erosion models for the European Union. He has led a number of projects for the Office of Naval Research, concerning the development of Delft3D as an open-source model for the Navy, the assessment of this model on the San Diego Bight, the development of a tool to quickly set up models and the development of a method to derive nearshore bathymetries from video data. He has also led the Deltares effort to develop an open-source dune erosion model, called XBeach. He has been involved in the model’s application for moored vessels (in a joint industry project) and to coral reef environments in a collaboration with the U. Western Australia.
