The wind energy industry is facing challenges with design and maintenance of cable protection systems (CPS) that are typically applied for the wind turbines within an offshore wind farm. Quite soon after commissioning – well before reaching the end of the design lifetime of these wind farms – some operators and wind farm owners are confronted with a significant level of wear of cable protections systems, which is far beyond the level of wear expected at this stage and can lead to significant additional costs. The unanticipated wear of these type of systems means that the present design strategy does not appear conservative and that measures need to be taken to stabilize and protect such subsea power cables.
