The economic challenge is to align Functional Life with Technical Life, both at the level of the object and at the network level. The quest is for an economic optimum between intervention for replacement and/or rehabilitation on the one hand, and performance on the other. Figure 2 demonstrates the principle, using flood protection as an example. The optimisation principle is to minimise the combined costs associated with asset operation. These are the costs of life extension and the costs of expected (residual)disruptions in service and/or function.
